Don’t miss the good news!

So… what is the good news? The basic message of the Bible is the gospel, or “good news”, of the person and work of Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul has given us the most straight forward presentation of the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures

Jesus Christ, fully God – and yet fully man, died on the cross in our place. In so doing, he paid the penalty for our sins. Three days later He rose to conquer sin and death, and to offer the free gift of salvation to all who believe in Him alone for eternal life.

  • God loves you. It is only by Jesus Christ’s sacrificial work on the cross that we can know God. Many try to gain God’s favor by doing good things, or following strict religious guidelines, thinking that if they can obey God He will love them. The truth is, it is because God loves us that we can obey Him. (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:4-5)
  • You are a sinner. Some mistakenly believe that the world is filled with good people and bad people. The truth is, everyone has sinned because everyone has disobeyed God. (Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:10)
  • Sin separates you from God. Sin forms a divide that prevents you from having a personal relationship with God, who is holy. As an unholy sinner, you cannot have fellowship with a holy God. You are headed for Christless eternity that the Bible calls Hell. (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 3:23)
  • You can’t save yourself. You cannot trust in what you do as a good moral person to save yourself. The gospel says that you should trust in the perfectly sinless life of Jesus because He alone is the only good and truly moral person who will ever live. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; Romans 4:4-5)
  • God sent His son Jesus to bridge the divide between God and man. What you cannot do for yourself, Jesus Christ has done for you! Your sin is a barrier between you and God. The good news is that Jesus died on the cross for you and then rose from the dead to demonstrate that His payment was acceptable to God. By taking your punishment on Himself, Jesus made a way for you to have a relationship with God. (1 Peter 2:23; Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 10:9)
  • You can receive God’s gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Religion tells us that we have to do things to be saved, but the good news is that it has already been done. You just have to accept the free gift of forgiveness by admitting to God that you are a sinner, and asking Him to forgive your sins. (Romans 6:23)
